I have four mystery snails, just found egg clutch in the top of the tank hood.?

the clutch seemed to be very dried out but very intact it has been a week since i have the hood off was doing water change, question is how long does it take for the snails to hatch and how often do they lay eggs because they was doing the humpty last night, and kinda want to be ready for the next clutch before hand so i can seperate babies at hatching. thank you in advance

hey nirro, congrats on the snail nookie going down in the tank!!
mystery snails ROCK and they take great digi pics!

check the clutch daily, when you see they have darkened you know it's with in hours or a day of hatching.
I always took a razor blade and a tupperware container (rubbermaid works of course) with some floss (batting or cotton balls) moistened but NOT soaking as the clutch will drowned if soaked in water. then I'd let nature take its course and they'd hatch themselves I'd then submerg in a ten gallon thats been cycled well.

keep in mind that snails are sensitive to salts and most of your dechlorinators have some sort of salt in them. It's best when doing water changes on any snail tank to use bottled water or let the new water sit out for a few hours so chlorine etc gasses can disapate.
CHEERS!
those things reproduce so fast.i thought it was cool at first..but then they overran my tank.they climb out of the water to lay their eggs(obviously if you found it in the hood.) and the eggs are usually dry.they get dark when they r about to hatch. i had to check all the time for new eggs.they never stopped!!

I have found snail like things in my tropical fish tank what are these?

they just appeared out of the gravel I have had for some time thank you
Answers:
They are probably snails, and can be a good or bad thing.
If you over-feed your fish tank, the snail population will bloom like crazy, to the point where there is no longer enough food so they start to die off. This fouls the water, which kills more snails and eventually your fish. Be careful!
If you don't overfeed your tank, they are just another happy little critter that you can watch in your tank, and this one you got for free!
Snails!
Thats not unusual, they just appear and they help keep your tank clean. If you get too many ,just through them out.
hhhhhhhhhhuuuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmm. don't know but i still get two points ha!!
probably snails. you can go to the pet store and buy a fish that likes to eat snails if you want to keep your tank free of them. but if it's not affecting your fish's health then maybe you should just leave it.
Do you use live plants? If so the snail eggs may have been imported to the tank on a plant you introduced. Before they hatch they drop off the plant. Then as you say 'appear' out of the rocks.

Other than that I'm not real certain how you got them unless you bought used gravel. But still unlikely if you waited for it to dry before putting it in your tank.

Snails will eventually over run your tank. And not many people like them so they would be hard to get rid of. I would talk to your vet or your pet shop to see about humane choices.
sounds like malaysian live bearing snails, they are very tricky to get rid of. i have them in my aquariums and there must be hundreds that hide in the gravel and come out at night.
Do they look like thin white worms? If so, that's called planaria, usually come out when the fish are overfed.

I have fishes in my fish tank and im hungry should I eat the fish?

Answers:
No silly do-not eat your fish they are pet's and rely on you to feed and take care of them, go eat some fish-sticks instead!
no
depends on how hungry you are.
if you feel like it yeah eat them
how old are ya, two?
No, just grab a piece of fruit.
eww no! go 2 burger king and get a burger
go for it
no, cuz they're probably soaking in the tap water that you put them in. and the tap water has chlorine and stuff in it, making it terrible and disgusting. plus, when they're in a tiny little tank, they're swimming around in their poop.. plus, yur taking another life.. there are already humungous amounts of slaughtered fish in the grocery store, fish who's lives have been taken crudely and grossly.. so don't kill your fish. go have a salad with lots of pine nuts..
No you should not eat you fish. What is wrong with you?
no stupid
LOL.ummm.NO of course not. Their your family
I wouldn't recommend doing that. It may seem like a good idea, but you will probably wind up rather sick to your stomach.
Yes you should (if you want to die). Well not die, but be sick as hell. The food you feed your fish while in a tank, is not for human consumtion, but please, try it anyway, and let us know what the side effects were. I always wondered why fish food says "Do not feed to fish that are intended for human consumption".I look forward to your response.

i have few gold fishes and they always are together at the corner of the tank at the same time all the time?

Answers:
Check to see if that corner is at a different temp. then the rest of the tank. You may need to add an air stone to circulate the water more ( and they love playing in the bubbles).
A
It's called schooling. All fish do this.
Mine do the same when they're in that non-sleep-sleeping stage. I think it's just part of their genetic make up that they'd school together when sleeping, hoping that one would awaken and raise the alarm to the others if a predator was getting too close.

Or maybe I'm just anthropomorphising.
Hmmmm..I think something fishy is going on.
try putting in more plants and rocks in the water the more you have the more places they have to go to.
I'M SURE WHEN THE FISH ARE MORE COMFORTABLE WHEN THEY ARE TOGETHER. gATHERING IN THE CORNER LIKE THEY ARE PROBABLY JUST MAKES THEM FEEL MRE SAFE THAN BEING OUT IN THE TANK ALL ALONE.
Water quality problems. Do an immediate partial waterchange makeing sure to not go past 50 percent and make sure the new water is dechlorinated and the same temp as the tank water.

WHenever a fish is sittin on the bottom or gasping at the top or there is redness around gills and fins, it is a sign of bad water quality, either high ammonia or high nitrites. What size tank is it and how often do you do partial waterchanges.
I agrees with Lady_crot, nena and those who talked about schooling. but to ad to Lady_crot. you might also need to check your water temp, and circulation. gold fish are tough cold water fish, but they have thier limits too. a small filter and air pump can do a lot of good with a water change.
If there in the corner there just behing closer because they feel safer closer with a bit of time and food they'll get used to it
its normal

i have bought a filter i have a 2ft tank how much time i should run it?

i have four chiclids should i add a betta or a oscar in my tank
Answers:
Your filter needs to run 24/7 to be effective. The only possibly safe things to add into a chiclid tank are plecos, barbs, loaches, sharks and other chiclids.
A
adding a betta not a good idea you should add a Oscar depending on what kind of cichlids you have and run the filter all day how big is the tank in gallons?
1. Aquarium filtration should run continuously, 24/7.

2. Your aquarium is too small for an oscar. They're very large fish.

3. Your cichlids will kill a beta.
it should run all the time.
unless the cichlids keep pace with the oscar, I wouldn't do it.
the oscar will void your tank of other fish and the betta may not be aggressive enough to keep the other cichlids at bay.
Well, oscars get big - over 12 inches long. Even if you buy the oscar at the commonly available pet store size of two inches he'll grow up! You can really only have 2 full grown oscars by themselves in a 55 gallon tank. When they get to that size they will eat your yellow labs and any Bettas around. I would not get an oscar for this tank.

The Betta would probably get its fins nipped and get picked on./harassed by the yellow labs because bettas are peacful towards other fish and slow moving.

I would try to stick to other rift lake cichlids, especially since many other tropical fish do not have the same requirements as rift lake cichlids such as the high water pH.

Filtration should run 24/7.
Is this a new tank? Or just a new filter? Either way you are probably going to see some changes in your water parameters. I would not add any new fish at this moment.
Firstly the answer to your filter
there are two types of filters Bio or Under gravel filters and others are box/sponge type filters. Once the under gravel filter is put it has to run 24/7 otherwise there will be a backlash of bacteria and the aquarium will be infected. The box type filters can be switched off but recommended that filters run 24/7.

For keeping Oscars you need a minimum of at least 3ft x 2ft x 1.5 ft tank and Oscars are aggressive fish and do not fair well in community tanks.

Fighting Betta males are a shy fish and two males cannot be kept together or they will fight. If you want to keep a single male Betta recommended keep in a Fish bowl.

I have been seeing tree frogs on the windows of my house lately, can I put them in my freshwater aquarium?

My aquarium is 10 gallons, 2 months old, and has 5 adult guppies in it and 1 baby guppy. I have 3 plastic plants in there, and a thing that blows bubbles, if I lowered the water level, and put something where the frog could get to the surface, would it be OK to put some tree frogs in there?
Answers:
There are a certain kind of frogs that you can get a pet stores that live in water and come up to get air. Those are not tree frogs. If you lower the water in your aquarium of that size there will not be enough for your fish to stay healthy. Why not enjoy the tree frogs when they decide to greet you. What would you feed them? And how sad to limit them to just a little dry area in the tank. Also, as you no doubt know, they have little suction cups on their feet making it easy to escape from your aquarium. Bad idea.
Tree frogs are not aquaetic, so they need land. Plus you would have to catch bugs for it too eat. They are better off in the wild where they belong. Maybe get a dwarf aquetic frog at your local petstore, they usually aren't more then $5 each and they eat fish food.
Leave them in the wild, it's where they belong and you don't know what possible illness they carry.

Also, this should be a bit obvious but TREE frogs arn't aquatic.
no, because they are land frogs and will die if you put them in water!!i should know becasue i tried and the little froggie dies the next day!!
sure
No, tree frogs are not aqautic. You can get fully aquatic African dwarf frogs at the petstore. If you want tree frogs, don't take them from the wild - you can get a vivarium and buy some from the petstore.

That's cool that you get tree frogs on your windows, though. All we have where I live are toads.

I have been running my tank for 2 weeks now?

i think i have a 30 gallon ..lol..not sure ..anyways does anyone have any ideas about what kind of fish i should put in it? I am a beginner and i dont want mollies or any community fish i want semi agressive . :)
Answers:
Had to do some searching since It has been a few years since I had my tanks. All I remember is the how relaxing it was to observe with my kids approx 25 different specie including crabs, turtles, snails in two 30 gal tanks.

This page has a good listing of various tank communities and specie compatibility.

hope it helps and good luck

Red Oscars
um.. them ones with big eyes.. haha cuz they look funny
You don't want agressive fish (ie: oscars) in a tank that size. Oscars get over a foot long and anything else that is agressive needs lots of space or they are more likely to fight with each other. The rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon of tank. You have to take into account the adult size of the fish, not the size it is when you buy it or it can out grow your tank. Try something like tiger barbs. They only get 4-5 inches and are semi agressive.
Go to a reputable tropical fish store, and talk to the sales person. They can help you with selection. I could recommend a few fish, but they may not be available at your store.

Meanwhile, here's an informative site that explains how to set up a tank and keep it healthy.

SnowFlake Eel maybe
I was talking about this very topic with my son this week. Are you aware you need to put in the cheapest fish you can buy for a month or so, use the nitrate/nitrite test kit, and watch the toxic stuff. The levels rise to a level which kills ordinary fish, then suddenly comes into balance and then is time to put in good fish.

Of course, maybe they have developed a new chemical additive to correct this, but do check it out before you put in new fish that cost a lot.
