I am thinking of getting a fish. What kind would you suggest?

Freshwater, preferably, low-mantenance and on the cheap side.
Answers:
Just ONE fish? LOL Sorry.I'd get fish for what's called a "common community", that is, regular, low-maintenance fish that get along well. Some examples would be guppies, neon tetras (really pretty when in schools!), swortails, gobies, "kissing gouramis" and a catfish or two (they keep the bottom clean).

See my post on changing water (they guy with the puffer fish) and getting a tank started. Also, find a reputable store, with knowledgable staff. Any store that tries to sell you a huge tank and a bunch of fish at once is ripping you off (and you fish will die)!

Start off with a 10 or 20-gallon, freshwater tank, a good book and ONE fish! In 10 days or so, you can start adding to your collection.the rule being: 1 inch of fish per gallon of water.

www.petsmart.com has some nice "starter" tanks. You might want to give that a try. But I wouldn't buy fish over the 'net.you need to see them!

Good luck!
A stingray.
Go to the nearest Creek and scoop up some minnowsl.
I suggest a goldfish.

Fresh water sharks are some pretty interesting pets to have. You will need a fairly big tank eventually, however.
how big of a tank?(add in details)i have to know the size tank to tell you what would be a good fish.
Get one of those fighting fish. You can only have one or they will fight to the death. You can get those cool little bowls from the pet store with built in light and all that stuff. They require very little effort to keep and are cheap.
Probably a goldfish would be a good starter fresh water fish. I'll assume you don't have a heater or a filtration system. Goldfish can handle even freezing water temperatures. They can live outside even in the winter. If you go to a petshop you can get what are called feeder fish. They're used to feed carniverous fish like piranahs. You can probably get them for like a quarter a piece. Good luck.
Get a betta. Live long, not as dirty (poop wise) as other fish, and really easy to maintain. Just don't mix it with any other fish. They are fighters.

I have a pacu. They are easy to maintain they live a long time but they do require a very large aquarium and large amounts of food as they can grow up to three feet in length.
