I feel some electric charge on my aquarium, what should I do other than shut off all power?

Answers:
Turn off and unplug your hood light, Filter, Heater and any electrical device that is touching the tanks top (water. The electric current does not hurt the fish because the water is not grounded. But when you touch the water/metal you are grounded and get an elect rial shock. Check the wiring in the hood light , Do you have an outside filter that is splashing water on the hood? Inspect the heater to see if there is a crack in the glass tube.

silk rubbing with glass stick has positive charge.
i just realized that if it's a electric shock, u can use the second method the silk one.

Do you have a heater on the tank? It sounds to me like you may have a crack in your heaters outter cover somewhere.

Something in the fish tank, filter, pump. needs to be grounded so your fish do not die of electrocution..

Is everything plugged into one outlet? And is the outlet grounded? And are you using a reliable breaker bar?

Try unplugging everything. Then plug your equipment in one at a time to figure out what is causing the shock. Once you figure out what it is, you should look into replacing it (or, if you can't replace it right away, if you can see a cut in the wire, tape it with electrical tape until you can get a new one).

Your fish will be unaffected by all of this, so worry more about your safety than theirs right now.

Put a GFI ground fault interupter within the outlet, after you have an electrician fix the problem. DO NOT play with the plugs or anything else, especially around salt water which is very hightly conductive. Turn off the breaker and then unplug everything and use extension cords to another plug. If it happens again. You have a piece of faulty equipment and need to figure out what it is, AWAY from the tank. Look for cracks, tears, breaks, etc, etc. Often it IS the heater, as the other writer said. Do not fool with this it is ELECTRICITY. You are lucky you only got a buzz, you could have gotten electrocuted and be DEAD.
