Hungry Beta!?

When my beta fish of more than 2 yrs died a couple of weeks ago I brought home a new beta from the pet store.

I've never seen a beta eat like my new one. He scarfs 4 or 5 of his pellets and then starts stealing the frog's food. My old beta was a healthy eater - he ate a couple of pellets every day - but it was nothing like this.
I'm worried about overfeeding my new friend, but I also don't want him to be under fed. Anyone have any experience with this?

he sounds like a teenager! Anyways it sounds like you are feeding him an okay amount. 4-5 pellets a day is good. Watch his gut (directly behind his gills). If it is nicely rounded then your fine; if it starts to bulge then you are feeding him to much. also it is healthy for fish to fast a day. this may be difficult to do when Kermit is around (sry i renamed your frog but it is so cute) and may have to eventually seperate them so that the betta doesn't eat to much and the frog gets enough. good luck.
My betas have a healthy appetite to. they know when it is feeding time, and become very active.
1 of my female crunches her food, I can actually hear her.
the other female pops her food in and out.
The two males just eat theirs up.
you could vary his diet by feeding dryed or frozen blood worms. he could just be eating so much because he hasnt been feed normally. he should get over it as he realizes he's feed everyday.
All of the bettas I've ever had will overeat. This is common behavior for most fish. It is up to you to limit his diet.

If possible, use a turkey baster to feed the frogs (sink the food before your betta has a chance to get at it). Most bettas will not eat off the bottom.

Do not regularly feed freeze-dried foods - this will contribute to constipation and could lead to swim-bladder issues (which could lead to death). If you do choose to feed freeze-dried, soak it in tank water for a couple of hours before feeding. This will allow the food to soak up water and expand before going into your betta's stomach.
